Sgt. Erich Scott Smallwood was born on Sunday, May 20, 1984 in Blytheville, Ark. He passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007 near Balad, Iraq at the age of 23 years and 6 days. He lived most of his lifetime in the Trumann and Jonesboro area, was a member of Company B of the 87th Troop Command's 875th Engineer Battalion based in Marked Tree; was a lifeguard at the Trumann Country Club and of the Baptist faith.Survivors include his fianc

    I can tell by what his friends have said about him that this young man was a very good and special person to all who knew him.     Terah and JT,I'm so ready to wake up and this bad dream be over. But today it all became reality. I know there is nothing I can say to you to make things any better. What Kevin said was so true. When Erich told you he loved you, you knew he meant it. When I was in the hospital Erich drove all the way to Springfield to see me and he told me he felt helpless.     I will always remember and love Erich. I'm so proud of what he has done for America. He attended my church (Full Gospel Tabernacle) quite a few times throughout our teen years. We had a youth group out there that used to do all kinds of activities. I will never forget the day we were going to the water park and he showed up laughing and begging to go with us. We all pitched in money to pay his way in. He promised to buy me a soda one day because I gave the most. I laugh and cry at the fact that it never happened. I wish I would have that one more moment with him. So now in my prayers I tease him and say, "Erich, when I get up there you're going to buy me a coke!" I never really knew JT or Terah that well. My husband Brandon sends his greatest sypmathies to them. We love you all!

I did not know Erich but I do mourn someone who was so unselfish he gave his life and his freedom so that myself and many others can continue to enjoy ours. I am happy that someone that didnt know me loved me and everyone else in this country and in another enough to basicly give his life for us. For that I can only be grateful.     I don't know if you kids will remember me but you and your dad actually lived with me at one time on Dogwood Street in Trumann. And I have never forgotten any of yall. My tears and my heart goes out to each of you and your families. Since my son is serving in Korea, it kind of hit really close to home. Jimmy and Pam, I have no doubt in my heart and soul that there is nothing I can say to you that could possibly help you through this terrible tragedy. But know that my heart is broken just like it would be if it was my own son. Because for every fallen soldier,they were someones' daughter,son,father,mother, brother or sister. So having a so in the military I experience each one as if it was my own. I just want you to know that each and every one of you are in my heart and prayers. That I will pray that God gives you the strength and peace eventually to help you get over this. It is such a tragedy and he was so young,and my first thought when I seen his picture was "WOW he looked just like he did way back when. So know that my heart breaks for yall and my deepest sympathy is with all of yall.     I didnt know Erich at all...I just know he died serving our country...I know the pain of losing someone to war. I grew up during on military bases because my father was a memeber on the 81st airborn division and served during the first iraq war, while he didnt die many of my friends lost there fathers and brothers.     JT and Terah, We are so very sorry for your loss. Erich will be missed not only by his family but his fellow football teammates and everyone he met. His smile will be remembered. His love for his family and friends can never be put into words. I remember watching Erich playing basketball in elementary school on the youth teams. He always seemed to have the ball and score the points. That is something he carried with him, his desire to succeed. He carried this with him in his life.     I'm very sorry to hear of Sgt. Smallwood's untimely death. I know nothing I can say will make any of this any easier for the family or friends. Just knowing that folks care is the only comfort you can know. That and the comfort God allows you. I truly understand and am very sorry for your loss. I pray God will comfort you all in this very sad time.

    Erich,I just wanted to let you know that even though I didn't know on a personal basis, what you did to help protect me and the ones that I love is something that I don't think I have the bravery to do.You are most certianly a hero, and I am very proud to have known you, even it it was briefly.Terah and JT, you are in my prayers.

    Terah and J.T,I just wanted to let you guys know how sorry I am to hear about Erich's death. He was such a wonderful person who everyone loved. I graduated with him and have so many memories from growing up with him. I don't think anyone have any bad feelings about him. He will truely be missed but I know that he died doing what he was proud of. I think that kinda helps us all with this. Your brother was truely loved and will be missed. You all are in my prayers.
